John R. Hasson, Jr. passed away on July 26, 2016 at his daughter's home with family at his side in Austin, Texas. He has gone to his heavenly home at the age of 95. He was born in Dallas, Texas on March 18, 1921 to John R. Hasson, Sr. and Mannie Johnson and graduated Alvord High School as Valedictorian in 1939. He was raised during the Great Depression and fought for our country during World War II and was a part of the Greatest Generation. John, or Jack as he was known to family and friends throughout his life, completed his degree in Journalism from Texas Tech University after the Great War. He married the love of his life Alyce Countess on November 25, 1948 and raised two daughters and a son. Jack was a sports editor for the Avalanche Journal in Lubbock, Texas in his early years and worked there his entire career. He remained a sports enthusiast throughout his life and now has front-row seats for all Texas Tech Red Raider football and Texas Rangers baseball games as part of his elite-status in heaven.
John has gone to join the family that has left before him, his parents and younger brother Richard Carvel Hasson. John (Jack) is survived by his beautiful bride Alyce of close to 68 years, his children, Jacquie Stevens, Richard Hasson, and Shelley Hasson Garrett of Austin, Texas, 7 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren, and 2 great- great-grandchildren.
Words cannot even explain the light that was added to the lives of all that John touched, the kind-hearted soul and compassionate being that he was.
An intimate family memorial will be held on July 28, 2016. His remains will join those of family gone before him in his beloved Lubbock, Texas on August 6, 2016 at the Lubbock Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family knows that John would truly appreciate your donations as a veteran to Disabled American Veterans at www.dav.org.
