Devin Shea Kennedy-Puthoff, 41, was found dead of natural causes in Austin on November 3, 2016.

Born in Palo Alto, CA, Devin came to West Lake Hills with his family in 1985. Devin is survived by his father, Hal Puthoff, and his mother, Adrienne Kennedy, of West Lake Hills; sister Alexa Jones-Puthoff of Laurel, MD, brothers Brendan Puthoff and Collin Puthoff of Austin, Gavin Puthoff of St. Louis, half-brother Jeff Moore of Chicago, and nine nieces and nephews.

Family and dear friends from all phases of his life have described him as brilliantly creative, spontaneous, fiercely independent and tenacious in his quest to create a life of meaning, humility, and beauty. With his unique kindness towards all living things, stray dogs and cats and even Burmese pythons knew they would be adored in his care. Devin's laughter was a contagious song, lovely and deep, from his core, resonating in his listeners and putting deep laugh lines on anyone's face. At times friends or strangers alike would catch him performing original songs wherever a piano or a guitar was present, his soothing soulful voice melting hearts. Frequently he crooned about recapturing innocence, forgiveness, and the many faces of love. The next album was always on his mind.

From his youngest years Devin loved piano, theater work and musical comedy, enjoying roles in community productions, UIL competitions, plus theater and choir productions at Westlake High School, Austin. At 17, Devin's extraordinary rendition of Luther Billis in the WHS choir production of South Pacific gave him his entrée into Comedy Sportz Austin, as the youngest member of this improv comedy troupe playing various venues on Sixth Street. In his early 20s, Devin enjoyed open mics around Austin and in California for original guitar and vocals and for the occasional round of stand-up comedy. Ever a gifted, prolific writer and aspiring filmmaker, Devin collaborated with friends for their original short film "Waiting for Scooby," shown locally. His musical talents as a songwriter earned ASCAP status when his original songs were used in a movie.

During high school Devin auditioned and earned parts in professional film projects filmed in the Austin area: one with Vanessa Redgrave and Rod Steiger ("Ballad of the Sad Café") and, later, as the photo double for Leonardo DiCaprio in "What's Eating Gilbert Grape." Devin's favorite job –right after high school –was as a production assistant to Steven Seagal during the filming of "Under Siege 2" in Hollywood. Devin is listed in the credits by name, first among three other PAs.

Devin's capacity for humor and shtick was infinite. His love of the absurd could be summed up with one word –the one word he would give it: cabbage. Decades of seemingly random yet elaborately-planned practical jokes have become something of legend. They generally involved inanimate objects, such as a guitar, perhaps a vegetable or a can of English muffins, a hapless victim, and a microphone or a video camera to capture a broader audience. A getaway driver was at hand. Deft impersonations, endless wordplay, the never-ending edits of a "short" story originally drafted in his high school history class about a man named "Waldo" stuck at a truck stop. Questionable songs on acoustic guitars about one friend's ex-girlfriends and Texas Tornados. This man could make you laugh.

Most importantly, out of his own passions and commitments, Devin transformed and inspired countless others, friends, colleagues and family members . . .all those whose lives were inalterably changed by knowing and loving him unconditionally.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks for designated gifts to NAMI Austin, local affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, or to the American Diabetes Association.
