Johanna Catharina Meyer, 73, born in The Strand, South Africa, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Monday, April 11, 2017 surrounded by her family.

Johanna was born on June 16, 1943 to Aletta and Josia Uys. She was her grandmother Hannie's favorite grandchild and namesake. She grew up in the Cape with her sister Anna, who precedes her in death. Together they spent hours "undressing chickens" (a term she thought more fitting than dressing, and an indication that she'd had the same great sense of humor from a young age), tending to flower gardens (a task she never came to love), and accompanying her dad to sea to fish. At the young age of 12, Johanna accepted the Lord into her heart with gladness, and faithfully followed His path until the day He called her home.

In 1958, Johanna met William Joseph (Joe) Meyer at her mother's home and reluctantly agreed to accompany him for a night at the theater for fear of wasting an expensive ticket. Joe, smitten and stubborn, pursued her until she too was head over heels in love. The two married three years later and together raised six wonderful children.

Johanna served the Lord with unyielding faith in all that she did. She had a heart of selfless service, rising before the sun to care for her family, making warm clothing and food for children at the school who would otherwise be without, and putting needs and desires of every other person first before even considering her own. Johanna never spoke an ill word of anyone, believed that every heart was good, and treated every person with kindness and respect. Every night when her family went to sleep, she stayed up in the dark to read her Bible and pray.

Johanna will be remembered as a loving and serving wife, tender mother, joyful grandmother and great grandmother, and a wise friend; who never forgot a birthday, anniversary, big exam or game of anyone she knew and loved. She will be greatly missed!

Johanna is survived by her loving husband of 57 years, William Joseph Meyer; her children Josia and Rhena Meyer, Gert and Ansie Meyer, Aletta and Johan van der Walt, Anna and Rob Seago, and Liesl and Mario Kleynhans; her grandchildren Mariana and Clayton Raley, Izak and Kristin van der Walt, Melissa and Louis Lizemore, Michelle and Jan-Hendrik Smit, Lelani and Kevin O'Connell, Natalie Seago, Collin Seago; her great-grandchildren Diane and Christopher Kleynhans, Quinn and Zoey Raley, and Johan van der Walt. She is remembered and missed dearly by her family and friends.

She is preceded in death by her daughter Johanna van Loggerenberg.

May she rest in peace with the God she loved more than anything.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made in Johanna's memory to the family's church, Soma Austin (https://somaaustin.churchcenteronline.com/giving/to/johanna-meyer-memorial).

The funeral service will be held on April 22nd at 10 am at St John's United Methodist Church in Georgetown, followed by the burial at noon at Our Lady of the Rosary Cemetery.
