Ronald Baxter Harrist 1936 - 2010

Loving husband, dedicated father, doting grandfather, accomplished statistician, adventurer, traveler, Master Gardener, wonderful chef, master swimmer, black belt in martial arts (started and completed after the age of 70!), yoga student, friend of parks, habitual woodworker, hiker, trivia master, respected teacher and mentor, lifelong student, nurturer of souls, stargazer, foster parent, punster, author, guitar player, builder of schools in Mexico, positive influence on many, respected colleagues. But mostly we will remember him as a kind and gentle man.

Ronald Baxter Harrist was born December 24, 1936 in Lubbock , Texas , to William Baxter Harrist and Edith Mozelle Collins. He left the family farm to pursue his love of mathematics, which only grew st ron ger through the years. He earned a BS and MS in Mathematics and Physics from Texas Tech, and a PhD in Statistics from SMU.

He is survived by his wife Kay, son Steven and wife Amanda, son Walter and wife Margaret, daughter Rebecca Montgomery and husband Rob, stepsons Hilton Moore and wife Karen and Lawton Moore, grandchildren Duncan, Emily, Caroline, Alanna, Mollie, Lucas, Mark and Baxter.

Ron was on the Biostatistics faculty at the University of Texas School of Public Health in Houston for 28.583 years until his retirement in 2000. After moving to Austin , he was integral to the establishment of the Austin regional campus of the UT School of Public Health and was its first Director. During his 38-year career in biostatistics, Ron participated in hundreds of epidemiological, medical and public health studies and was widely published in these fields. His work with colleagues and mentorship of students improved the lives of countless people worldwide. He was recently nominated for the prestigious Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Shepard Award.

Ron died on June 19 surrounded by his loving family. A celebration of his life will be held on July 3, 2010 at 2:00pm at University United Methodist Church, 2409 Guadalupe Street, Austin, TX 78705-4895 www.uumc.org/. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Ronald B. Harrist Student Scholarship Fund for UT School of Public Health Students, P.O. Box 203366 , Houston 77216-3366 .
